A very special short film.
"Leather Jude is a documentary about Jewish Holocaust survivor Hans Biglajzer and the significance of his craft as a saddle maker. Born March 24, 1926 in Bad Honnef, Germany, Hans learned to work with leather in the Lodz Ghetto, a craft that proved integral to his survival at Auschwitz and Dachau. Today he lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife, Dorothy. Themes of memory, tragedy and truth are interlaced throughout the documentary as Hans tells his story about where he learned to work with leather, his brush with death at Auschwitz, and the truth about the key to his survival. The documentary juxtaposes Hans memory of his experience in the Holocaust and his present-day occupation as a master saddle maker in Central Oregon, a place where few people know of his Holocaust past. Despite losing his entire family, Hans turned a craft he learned from one of the ugliest chapters in human history into a life-fulfilling career that is revealed in Leather Jude, a story rooted in tragedy and the truth about survival -- a story about an enduring spirit that everyone can relate to, Holocaust survivor or not.
